| Summary | In the desolate, snow-swept plains of Siberia, Japanese soldiers are thrust into a brutal war they never asked for. As a biting wind freezes their very souls, they are forced to requisition sleighs from deeply resentful Russian farmers, like young Ivan, whose lives are upended by the foreign invasion. Among the ranks, men like the fiery Yoshihara and the ailing Kimura grapple with the senseless violence, their bodies and spirits worn thin by the unforgiving winter and the unending pursuit of an invisible enemy. But the battle outside is only one front. Their true adversaries emerge within their own ranks: corrupt, tyrannical officers epitomized by the callous Major Chikamatsu, who exploits his men for personal gain and ambition. As the soldiers witness their own humanity eroding, and the cost of obedience becomes unbearable, they are pushed to a terrifying precipice.
