  • 1. Acceptance of Terms

    By accessing or using the Japanese Literature Translation Demonstration website ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use ("Terms"). This Service is provided solely for research and demonstration purposes concerning the reception and impact of machine-generated literary translations.

  • 2. Research and Intellectual Property

    The original Japanese texts are sourced primarily from Aozora Bunko, which is in the public domain in Japan, and the data were obtained from the Hugging Face dataset “aozorabunko-clean” (https://huggingface.co/datasets/globis-university/aozorabunko-clean), licensed under CC BY 4.0. All English translations ("the Translations") are machine-generated using technology developed by the Service Provider.
    The original texts may be subject to global copyright laws outside of Japan. Users are responsible for confirming their compliance with the laws of their own jurisdiction.
    The Translations are provided "as is" for reading and research purposes only. Any reproduction, distribution, or commercial use of the Translations requires explicit permission from the Service Provider.

  • 3. Use Restrictions and Conduct

    You agree not to use the Service for any activities that violate laws or are offensive to public order and morals. Specifically, you must not:
    Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Service or its underlying data.
    Use the Service to generate translations for commercial purposes.
    Attempt to reverse-engineer or extract the underlying translation algorithms.
    Engage in any activity that disrupts the integrity or performance of the Service.
    Use the Service in a manner that is contrary to public order and morals.
    Use the Service in a manner that infringes upon or damages the personal dignity of the author.
    Use the Service in a manner that distorts the author's creative intent.
    Use the Service in a manner that may cause a modified version to be mistaken for the original work.
    Use the Service for political purposes.
    Engage in any other use or conduct deemed to interfere with the objectives of this project.

  • 4. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

    The Service is offered as an experimental project. We do not guarantee the absolute accuracy, completeness, or suitability of the Translations for any particular purpose.
    The Service Provider is not liable for any errors or omissions in the Translations.
    The Service Provider is not liable for any direct or indirect damages resulting from the use of the Service or the inability to use the Service.
    The Service is accessible via websites on PCs, smartphones, and tablets; however, compatibility with all devices and browsers is not guaranteed.
    The Service is scheduled to be available to the public during the experimental period; however, it may be suspended, resumed, or terminated at any time without notice.
    An inquiry form using Microsoft Forms is available. Please note that accessing the inquiry form may require navigating to a separate URL from the help page or similar pages, which will open in a web browser.
    If a user accesses or uses the Web Application via their mobile device or other equipment, any communication fees incurred on such devices will be borne by the user.

  • 5. Handling of Collected Data

    The Service does not collect any personally identifiable information. Any data collected will be handled as follows:
    The collected data may be used to improve service quality and related technologies, including the accuracy and readability of machine translation.
    The collected data will also be used in aggregated statistical form, including web browsing information such as access source information, pages visited, and visit frequency.
    Responses provided through inquiries may also be used. All such data will be used in a manner that does not identify individuals.
    The collected data may be shared with contractors and subcontractors and may also be used for research purposes.
    Products, systems, or services developed based on the User Data may be used commercially and may also be provided to third parties for commercial purposes.
    The User Data is scheduled to be deleted promptly after the conclusion of the Experiment. However, if the User Data has been used in research papers by NICT or others, it may be retained for a specified period to ensure research integrity and reproducibility.

  • 6. Governing Law

    These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Japan, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.
