Summary In a quiet Japanese village, Hosokawa Shigeru, a diligent school principal, harbors a secret, fervent love for Umeko, the stunning daughter of his former teacher, Mr. Fukumoto. Mr. Fukumoto, a man consumed by the faded glories of his past and bitter about his present, has become an unpredictable tyrant, ruling his home with booming pronouncements.

Hosokawa's silent devotion is tested when university-educated bachelors, including his rivals, return, setting the village abuzz with speculation about Umeko's future. As Mr. Fukumoto battles his inner demons and lashes out at everyone, Hosokawa must confront not only his own perceived social shortcomings but also the formidable, class-conscious prejudices of the old man. Will Umeko be sacrificed to her father's wounded pride and the relentless pursuit of status, or can an unassuming principal defy destiny to win the heart of the woman he loves?
