Summary Michihiko’s ordinary youth is shadowed by his mother’s threats of sending him to his eccentric Uncle Kōtarō in Tokyo. A brilliant botanist convinced that only nature holds true scholarship, Uncle Kōtarō is a man whose intellect is matched only by his profound disregard for common sense. When Michihiko finally moves into his uncle’s home for university, he anticipates a comfortable, perhaps even lucrative, future.

Instead, he finds himself trapped in a bizarre household ruled by rigid silence, obsessive fastidiousness, and an unwavering diet of boxed lunches. His uncle’s world is a labyrinth of peculiar demands and inexplicable rages, where even a cough can earn a reprimand. Michihiko must navigate this alien landscape, his sanity and future hanging in the balance, as he grapples with the escalating eccentricities of a man consumed by his own singular vision. He soon discovers that some legacies come at too high a price.
