| Summary | Saburō Gōda is a man adrift, utterly unenthralled by the ordinary world. Plagued by a peculiar ennui, his only spark of interest comes from the dark allure of crime, though his fear of consequences keeps him from truly indulging. That is, until he moves into Tōeikan, a new boarding house, and discovers a labyrinthine attic spanning every room. This hidden world becomes his stage for "mock crimes," allowing him to voyeuristically pry into the lives of his fellow lodgers. But when he fixates on the detestable Endō, a sinister plot takes root: a murder so ingenious, he believes it utterly untraceable, dripped from above.
