Summary For young Kenichi, life is defined by his father's peculiar "occupation": idleness. When a school survey demands fathers' professions, the embarrassing truth is laid bare, forcing the family into an uncomfortable spotlight. Under his wife's relentless prodding, Kenichi's father declares a grand, if vague, plan: he will embark on a nationwide travelogue to gather "material" for a literary masterpiece.

What begins as a son's reluctant duty, accompanying his whimsical parent and his equally eccentric companions, soon transforms into an eye-opening journey through Japan's hidden corners and stranger customs. As peculiar incidents accumulate and the line between genuine exploration and elaborate charade blurs, Kenichi grapples with his father's true intentions. Will this whimsical expedition finally inspire the idler to find purpose, or prove that some habits are an unbreakable resolve?
