Summary Shigeshi, a humble joinery craftsman, navigates the narrow alleys of a Tokyo tenement, his life intertwined with two childhood friends: the brilliant, ambitious Sankichi, whom he idolizes, and the quiet, observant Ohisa. Shigeshi, ever self-effacing, believes Ohisa's heart belongs to Sankichi, accepting their destined union as inevitable. But his world splinters when he witnesses an intimate embrace between them, igniting a furious jealousy and forcing him to confront the messy chasm between his idealized perceptions and the painful truth of human desire.

As Shigeshi grapples with this perceived betrayal and the unraveling of his deepest beliefs, he's drawn into a complex web of ambition, deceit, and unspoken longing. What began as a simple friendship transforms into a poignant exploration of hidden affections and shattered illusions. Can Shigeshi forge his own path through the wreckage of his shattered dreams, or will he remain forever bound by the choices made—and unmade—beside fallen leaves?
